Schur modernises its digital infrastructure with Columbus and D365 F&SCM

Schur has implemented Microsoft Dynamics 365 F&SCM with Columbus’ support to unify its international entities in a single digital ecosystem. This streamlines workflows and creates new opportunities for digitalisation, IoT, and data analytics.

As the world’s oldest family-owned packaging company, Schur has a proud legacy of innovation and adaptability.

Now, in partnership with Columbus, Schur is building a digital bridge between history and the future through an ambitious transformation project driven by Microsoft Dynamics 365 F&SCM.

The solution provides Schur with a robust, future-proof “digital wrapping” that connects its global operations and supports sustainable economic growth.

The vision: One common group set-up

Schur’s digital transformation is guided by the vision “One Schur – One System – One Standard.”

The goal is to function and present ourselves as one unified organisation with shared methods, tools, and standards,” says Jan Damkjær, Group Digitalisation Director at Schur Holding.

Even though Schur is decentralised in terms of customers and markets, our IT infrastructure is now built around a common group set-up with shared systems and governance. Our strategy aims to harmonise IT across companies and raise digital competencies and mindsets.”

Schur’s previous ERP system, a heavily customised solution nearing end-of-support, became increasingly difficult to maintain. Over 20 years, the company had developed the system in-house to meet unique needs in packaging production, but it had drifted far from best practices.

Bridging companies and geographies

With Microsoft Dynamics 365 as a cloud solution, Schur set clear goals to unify the company within one system, creating efficiency and alignment across subsidiaries. D365 was chosen for its strong fit with the packaging sector.

The solution supports a joint digital strategy for complex organisations and enables seamless integration with Customer Engagement, Business Intelligence, SharePoint, and Power Apps, which improve workflows and knowledge sharing across industries,” explains Thomas Johansson, Sales Director, Dynamics at Columbus.

Our advisory role helped Schur optimise the platform and implement tools that deliver value in day-to-day operations while realising the benefits of ongoing digitalisation.”

Beyond F&SCM, Columbus also involved Schur in knowledge-sharing forums, leading to valuable insights now built into Schur’s processes.

A new mindset across the organisation

With six carton factories and three flexible packaging facilities, D365 F&SCM allows Schur to move resources and orders across locations for optimal capacity use.

The system makes it easier to integrate new acquisitions efficiently through roll-outs, helping us expand. The evergreen strategy ensures we always have access to the latest technologies, continuously improving workflows and boosting efficiency,” says Jan Damkjær.

Self-service solutions like Power Apps now enable customers to manage processes digitally, while F&SCM forms part of a broader IT landscape.

One of the biggest outcomes has been a shift in mindset across the organisation. With a strong digital foundation, Schur feels ready to face future challenges and opportunities.

Modern technology attracts IT talent

The new Dynamics 365 platform has become a key tool in connecting Schur’s geographically dispersed operations while also making the company more attractive to IT professionals.

By adopting a comprehensive ecosystem that includes Customer Engagement, F&SCM, and advanced BI tools, Schur has built an infrastructure that supports cross-location collaboration and standardised work processes. Today, Schur has a strong internal IT department of 30 employees.

"By choosing forward-looking technology, we haven’t just maintained but expanded our F&SCM team – a clear sign that our platform choice makes Schur a desirable workplace in the IT sector,” says Jan Damkjær.

Driving innovation and efficiency through data and technology

Schur is continuing its digital journey with a focus on using technology to optimise production and enhance data analytics.

IoT initiatives with Microsoft and Columbus are already underway. These projects aim to integrate data from Schur’s advanced printing machines, which feature up to 4,000 sensors, with data from D365.

The goal is to analyse production, increase efficiency, reduce costs, and improve quality and resource consumption.

From 2025, our ambition is to build a unified Business Intelligence set-up that integrates this data and creates new insights. We will also focus on advancing IoT, the Power Platform, BI, and integration between Customer Engagement and F&SCM. Apps, AI, and tools like Copilot will play an important role in supporting daily work and driving further digitalisation. Our vision is clear: to combine technology and data across the organisation to ensure ongoing innovation and efficiency,” says Jan Damkjær.

A true partnership

Schur sees its collaboration with Columbus as a long-term partnership built on shared values and a human approach.

As a family-owned business with a long history, relationships and culture are incredibly important to us. Columbus’ consultants stand out with their down-to-earth, clear, and practical mindset. They meet us at eye level, share our values, and work with a dedication that often makes them feel like part of our own team,” says Jan Damkjær.

It’s not just methodology or project management that makes the difference, but the people behind it: “Columbus’ consultants are deeply committed to Schur’s goals and stay engaged until the job is done right. This was especially evident during go-live, where they were present throughout and ensured a successful implementation. For us, it’s about working with people who understand our culture, share our values, and prioritise doing things right. That’s what makes Columbus a natural and invaluable partner for us,” says Jan Damkjær.
